PROFILE: The Arizona Diamondbacks originally signed Duaner Sanchez as a non-drafted free agent on October 16, 1996. He was scouted by the Diamondback’s, Junior Noboa, who directs the organization’s Latin American scouting effort and heads up the Dominican Baseball Academy. However, Duaner was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for veteran reliever, Mike Fetters, on July 6 of last season. The young pitcher has often drawn comparisons to Carlos Perez, because he possesses a very animated demeanor on the mound. Though Sanchez is not particularly tall, he throws his heater in the mid-90s. He also throws a breaking ball; however, he is still refining this pitch. Duaner is very aggressive and mentally tough on the mound, and has also proven to be very durable. However, Sanchez still needs to develop a third pitch and improve his overall control to be successful at the big league level. FINAL ASSESSMENT: We believe that Sanchez has the ability and mental makeup to be a successful major league relief pitcher. He has a live and very durable arm, but still needs to refine some of his pitches and to improve his overall control. The Pirates were very happy to get him for the malcontented veteran Fetters. Sanchez should be selected with a very late pick in the upcoming NABL draft, but because he pitched so few innings, there is a chance that he may not end up on the draft board when things are all said and done. |
