PROFILE:
Chone Figgins attended Brandon High School in Florida, where he was a third-team High School All-American as a senior in 1997, and was also named a first-team All-Conference in both his junior and senior years. He was also named second team All-Conference as a sophomore and was voted MVP in 1996. Originally selected by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the 1997 draft, Chone was named shortstop on the 1998 Northwest League post-season All-Star team. In 2000, he was also named to the Carolina League All-Star team. In 2002, he played for the Salt Lake Stingers, where he was leading the Pacific Coast League with 18 triples, 100 runs scored, and 39 stolen bases (tied with Memphis’ Chad Myers), he was also fourth in hits, with 156 at the time of his call-up to the big leagues. In addition, he batted .305 with seven HRs and 62 RBIs while at Salt Lake. Figgins possesses good speed and is a good contact hitter. However, he is more of a gap hitter than a power hitter. He also knows how to steal a base and how to run the bases, as evidenced by how often the Angels inserted him late into ballgames as a pinch runner last season down the stretch. Defensively, he displays adequate range at second and is sure-handed. He can also play shortstop in a pinch.

FINAL ASSESSMENT:
Chone Figgins is kind of a mysterious player. He is one of those guys who seems to perform well at the minor league level, but also one of those players who just hasn’t really been given a real shot at landing a major league job. Perhaps the Angels will try to work him into their offense more this major league season. He will probably never be an everyday major league player, but could be a valuable player to have around off the bench. If drafted, he’ll go very late in the upcoming NABL draft. It is believed that the Angels are much higher, at this point in time, on Alfredo Amezaga, than Chone Figgins, mostly because of Amezaga’s tremendous defensive ability.
